Atalanta visit Young Boys at 20.00 UK time tonight after knowing the result of Villareal-Manchester United. Here’s why Gian Piero Gasperini’s side hope the Red Devils don’t win in Spain.

The race to qualify for the last 16 is wide open in the Group F. Villareal and Man United have seven points each, two more than Atalanta.

United visit Villareal at 17.45 in the debut of their interim coach Michael Carrick.

Atalanta face Young Boys in Switzerland tonight and will host Villareal in the last group stage match in December.

If Villareal beat United by two goals today, Unai Emery’s side qualify for the last 16 with a game to spare.

This scenario would be favourable to Atalanta ahead of the last group stage game against the Yellow Submarine on December 8.

However, if both United and Atalanta win today, then La Dea would need a draw in the last match against Villareal.

Gasperini’s men qualify for the Champions League last 16 with two wins in the last two games.

  1. Incorrect – how can Atalanta go through with 4 points if Villareal win today? What if Man U still win the last game? They would have 10 points meaning Atalanta are out with 9.

  2. this isnt correct, if Man u lose today and win the last game they will have 10 points so 4 points in next two games for Atalanta would give them 9 points with Villareal on 10….
