Carlo Ancelotti was visibly annoyed when a journalist asked him about Eden Hazard, Gareth Bale and Luka Jovic after Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey elimination at the hands of Athletic Club last night.

A late goal from former Torino midfielder Alejandro Berenguer allowed the Basques to snatch a 1-0 win against the Merengues, qualifying for the Copa del Rey semifinals.

Bale, Hazard and Luka Jovic had all been left on the bench for the entire game and Ancelotti was asked if the trio had been punished (minute 2.25 in the video below). Fair to say that the former Milan coach was not impressed by the question.

“Why are you talking about Bale, Jovic and Hazard?” he replied.

“Why don’t you talk about [Dani] Ceballos or [Daniel] Carvajal? They also didn’t play, so are they supposed to be punished as well?

“I took my decision, but if you were honest, you would talk about Ceballos who didn’t even play one minute and the others who were on the bench and didn’t play. They are all at the same level.”

  1. Is this football Italia……… Or football Premiership or Football LA Liga Mr Lorenzo Bettoni?

I suggest you work harder to find more football relevant news on Seria A.

  2. Dear Gee, Football Italia has always been about Italian football and Serie A. So an article on Ancelotti makes perfect sense here unless you don’t know where he is from.

    Lorenzo Bettoni

  3. @joe & Lorenze
Following your logic, the more than 600 Italian players outside of Italy are relevant.
Including household names such as M. Boakye playing for AGMK in the Uzbekistan Super League,
    A. Agyeman plyaing for Kelty Hearts in the Scotisch League Two, or how about A. Loberto playing in Aalesund in the Norwegian Eliteserie.

  4. Exactly @Chris we select and write the most interesting stories regarding Italian football and Serie A.

That’s what my job is about, I am sure you agree that a story about Ancelotti tends to be more interesting than one on the Uzbekistan Super League.

  5. @Lorenzo
Sure, but if I wanted news about Ancelotti or Real Madrid, why would I go to FI?
https://www.football-espana.net/ would be a more obvious place.

I am happy to discuss this with you, an editor of FI, because you do this way to much. especially with news about Donnarumma in PSG which is so clearly click-bait aiming at ACM fans.

  6. Hello Chris, as I’ve already said, at Football Italia we touch on Serie A AND Italian football, which includes Italian players/coaches in the foreign leagues. It’s been like this since the very early days with the BBC Program and the magazine. The only difference is that back in the 90s all the best Italian players and coaches were in Serie A. Italian football has changed, so we need to change as well, not too hard to understand. It’s not extensive coverage, but just some news here and there. If you don’t like them, just don’t read. 98% of articles on Football Italia are still about Serie A. Regards, Lorenzo Bettoni.

  7. Agreed Lorenzo. Many of us have been watching these players, managers, and managers when they themselves were players back in the 90’s. Reading how they are all getting on now – albeit in different leagues – I personally find this enjoyable and heck it keeps the old nostalgia alive! It’s like characters in a soap opera going back decades – just not the same without them all. Keep doing what you’re doing. Forza FI!
