Locatelli impressed in the two first games, when the Azzurri started Euro 2020 with two consecutive 3-0 wins over Turkey and the Swiss.
But Verratti returned to the starting line-up when Mancini made eight changes against the Welsh, as the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder recovered from a knee injury that kept him out of the initial games.
With Nicolò Barella and Jorginho expected to start in the midfield trident against Austria in the knockout game in London, there would only be space for one of the two.
Locatelli arrives from a great season with Sassuolo and is linked with a move to Juventus this summer, confirming he will decide his future after the European Championship, but should he get the nod over Verratti?
Locatelli has only been capped 12 times and was given his first game by Roberto Mancini on September 7, 2020.
Verratti, on the other hand, has played 43 games with the Azzurri and took over the captaincy when Leonardo Bonucci was substituted at half-time against Wales.
