Milan’s victory over Newcastle wasn’t enough for them to move forward in the Champions League, so now they’ll drop down to the Europa League knockout play-offs.
The Rossoneri struggled to impress in Europe’s premier club competition this season, finishing third in a group containing Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle.
Stefano Pioli’s side picked up two wins, two draws and two losses, behind the Parisians on goal difference and their head-to-head record. Their win over the Magpies in their final outing secured a third-place finish, which’ll see them drop down to the Europa League.
Calciomercato.com highlighted Milan’s possible opponents in the play-off round of the Europa League, a two-legged affair that’ll determine if they can move on to the Round of 16 of the competition.
Teams finishing third in their Champions League group will face a club who finished second in their respective Europa League group.
UEFA will carry out the Europa League play-off draw on Monday December 18 at 2pm UK time at their headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
