Makkelie has never officiated a game of Atalanta or Real Madrid, but he was in charge of two matches of Serie A clubs in the Champions League this season.

He officiated Inter’s 3-2 win away at Borussia Monchengladbach in December and Juventus’ 2-0 loss in Turin against Barcelona in October when Merih Demiral saw red.
He also officiated one Champions League and one Europa League play-off this season and one match of the Club’s World Cup: this year’s semi-final between Palmeiras and Tigres.
Makkelie has refereed 28 Champions League games in his career, 14 in Europa League and 240 matches in Eredivisie.
He has shown 1577 yellow cards in 502 games in his career, conceding 160 penalty kicks. He has sent off 73 players after two yellow cards and took 65 straight red cards.
