Daniele Orsato has a tough task ahead of him tonight, as the Italian – with Marco Di Bello as VAR – must officiate the Champions League clash between PSG and Real Madrid.

The first leg of this Round of 16 tie kicks off at Parc des Princes at 20.00 GMT.

There is a definite Italian flavour to the fixture, as Azzurri players Marco Verratti and Gianluigi Donnarumma are in the starting XI for Paris Saint-Germain, while Carlo Ancelotti is the coach of Real Madrid.

UEFA have assigned Italian Orsato as the referee, with Ciro Carbone, Alessandro Giallatini and fourth official Daniele Chiffi assisting.

The VAR is Di Bello, with Massimiliano Irrati as his assistant in the booth.

Orsato is a 46-year-old referee who already officiated PSG in the Champions League Final in 2020, which they lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich.

That made him the eighth Italian referee to take charge of a Champions League/European Cup Final.

That was a vintage year for Orsato, who in 2020 was also named Best Referee in the World by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics.

He officiated three games at UEFA EURO 2020, including England-Croatia and the Round of 16 fixture between Sweden and Ukraine.

Orsato won the Stefano Farina award in 2021 as the best Serie A and B referee of the 2020-21 season.
