Sandro Schärer has been appointed for Milan-Tottenham on Tuesday; here’s a profile of the Swiss referee.

The 34-year-old is probably not the most experienced referee out there, having taken charge of nine Champions League matches in his career, including three involving Italian clubs, two of which this season.

Schärer oversaw Juventus‘ 3-1 win over Maccabi Haifa in Turin this season, the Old Lady’s only victory in Europe’s elite competition this term and Inter‘s 2-0 win over Victoria Plzen away.

He was also in charge of Juventus’ 1-0 victory against Zenit St.Petersburg last season, decided by a goal of Dejan Kulusevski.

Schärer has shown 31 yellow cards in his nine Champions League matches with no red cards.

However, during his 145 matches in the Swiss Super League, Schärer has shown 10 straight red cards and sent off 24 players through double yellow cards.

Schärer made his debut in the Swiss fourth division when he was only 21, and after three years later he took charge of his first game in the second division.

He was promoted to the senior division after less than one year, making his debut in the Swiss Super League in 2013, when he was barely 25.

His debut in European competitions came in 2015 in a Europa League play-off match between Elfsborg and Lahti while his first Champions League game was Barcelona’s 5-1 victory over Ferencvaros at Camp Nou.
