There is a Polish refereeing team in charge of tonight’s Champions League game between Juventus and Villarreal, led by Szymon Marciniak, who has not brought Italian clubs luck this term.

It kicks off at the Allianz Juventus Stadium in Turin at 20.00 GMT.

The first leg ended 1-1, but with the away goals rule abolished in Europe this season, a draw with any result tonight would force extra time.

Marciniak is a 41-year-old from Plock who has already overseen some big matches in his career, most notably the 2018-19 European Supercup between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

He also officiated several King’s Cup games in Saudi Arabia this term.

Marciniak does not bring good luck to Italian clubs in Europe, especially this season, as he has already overseen Milan’s 3-2 defeat at Liverpool in September, Atalanta’s 3-2 loss to Manchester United in October and Inter’s 2-0 home defeat to Liverpool in February.

He crossed paths with Juventus five times before, resulting in four victories and one defeat, 1-0 away to Sevilla in December 2015.

The most recent encounter was Juve’s 2-1 win away to Tottenham in the Champions League Round of 16 in March 2018.

He sent off Mario Lemina during the 1-0 victory away to Olympique Lyonnais in October 2016 and awarded a penalty, which Gigi Buffon saved from Alexandre Lacazette.

Marciniak’s only previous game with Villarreal was a 2-2 draw at home against Borussia Monchengladbach in the Europa League in November 2014.
