Sampdoria‘s Abdelhamid Sabiri and Fiorentina Sofyan Amrabat continued to impress for Morocco against Spain, helping their side qualify for the World Cup quarter-finals on penalties.

Morocco are arguably the biggest surprise in Qatar, having just eliminated Spain from the World Cup Round of 16 with a 3-0 win on penalties.

Fiorentina midfielder Amrabat started the match and once again put in an impressive performance in the middle of the park with 78% passing accuracy (25/32) and winning seven ground duels from seven.

The Morocco international joined Fiorentina in a €20m deal from Hellas Verona in 2020.

Sampdoria’s Sabiri was introduced in the second half and converted one of the penalties in the shootout.

He had made headlines earlier in the tournament, scoring a free-kick against Belgium.

The 26-year-old is under contract with Sampdoria but is expected to leave in January with several Serie A clubs interested, including Fiorentina.

Bari striker Walid Cheddira was also involved in the second half against Spain. He has scored 14 goals in 15 appearances across all competitions at a club level this season.

Former Inter defender Achraf Hakimi sent his national team to the quarter-finals by scoring with a Panenka penalty.

Morocco will meet the winner between Portugal and Switzerland, who meet tonight.
