Fiorentina had to make do without the influential Nico Gonzalez during their 2-0 win away at Udinese on Sunday, but Vincenzo Italiano is expected to welcome the Argentine back into the squad before the end of the week.

Gonzalez twisted awkwardly during La Viola’s 2-2 draw with Genk in the Conference League on Thursday and was subsequently replaced during the half-time interval. He was then left out of the squad entirely for Sunday’s Serie A fixture.

Gianluca Di Marzio details that Gonzalez has been on an individual recovery programme since the incident last week.

However, in a piece of positive news for Italiano and Fiorentina, Gonzalez is expected to return to training with the rest of the group on Tuesday, with the hope that a return to competitive action will follow shortly afterwards.

The timeline means that Gonzalez is still a major doubt for Thursday evening’s visit to Frosinone, although next Monday’s game against Cagliari is being tipped as the realistic return date.

In his absence, Josip Brekalo and Christian Kouame have been suggested by Di Marzio as the potential starters out wide against Frosinone.

Elsewhere, Fiorentina also confirmed on Monday that right-back Dodo is set to miss the majority of the 2023-24 season after picking up a serious knee injury over the weekend.
