There was a curious moment after Roma went down to nine men against Fiorentina, as Jose Mourinho asked a ball boy to deliver a message to goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

The scoreline was 1-1 at the Stadio Olimpico and the Giallorossi had seen both Nicola Zalewski and Romelu Lukaku sent off.

The coach immediately went to a ball boy who was stood near the bench and first tried to whisper something in his ear, then ran over to the bench, scribbled something on a piece of paper and told him to deliver it to Rui Patricio.

As the Roma staff are not allowed to go behind the goal, Mourinho knew the only way to get the message to his โ€˜keeper was via the ball boy.

DAZN caught the contents of it on camera and it was explained as placement on corners with Stephan El Shaarawy and Edoardo Bove covering the near post, especially after losing someone as strong in the air as Lukaku.

Rui Patricio read the note and handed it back to the ball boy, who has already said he will keep hold of it as a memento of the moment he briefly became part of Mourinhoโ€™s staff.

  1. What it actually said was , Mancini foul everyone and get no card , Lukkaka make a red card challenge , Paredes make a legbreaking tackle , all surround and attempt to bully the ref at every opportunity and Patricio waste time.
