Federico Gatti was the unfortunate centre of attention after his uniquely unlucky own goal in Juventus’ loss to Sassuolo.

The Bianconeri had been looking strong in the early stages of the new season, picking up three wins and a draw from their first four outings, but everything changed on a warm night in Reggio-Emilia.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side looked poor at the Mapei Stadium as they fell in a painful 4-2 defeat to Sassuolo, but one moment in particular left a lasting memory from the defeat – Gatti’s truly painful own goal in the 95th minute.

With the game drawing to a close, Wojciech Szczesny passed the ball out to Gatti, who made a dreadful choice after being closed down by turning to pass the ball back to the Juventus goalkeeper, who was still miles off his line.

Szczesny could only watch on in horror as the ball trickled into an empty net, capping off a miserable evening for the Old Lady. Gatti was embraced by Allegri after the full-time whistle and instantly disappeared into the dressing room.

His own goal dominated post-match discussions, with fans and pundits across the board sharing their frustration, amusement and confusion at the mistake.
