What Tomori’s injury means for Milan and how the Rossoneri could replace him

Fikayo Tomori is expected to remain out of action for at least a month due to a knee injury so Milan must continue their search for a new centre-back.

The former Chelsea defender suffered an injury against Genoa last night and will undergo keyhole surgery on his knee today.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Tomori will remain out of action for a month, missing at least the next three games against Spezia, Juventus and Inter.

Milan lost 43% of their matches without Tomori (three out of seven) since the Englishman joined the Meazza one year ago.

Therefore, Tomori’s injury is a huge blow for the Rossoneri who are already looking for a replacement for Simon Kjaer.

In December, the Dane sustained a more severe knee injury in another Serie A fixture against Genoa and has been ruled out of action for the remainder of the season.

Milan are already looking for a potential replacement for Kjaer, but will only sign one centre-back at the right conditions in January.

The Serie A giants are looking for a loan deal, either a dry one until the end of the season or with an option to buy.

Their primary targets are Torino centre-back Gleison Bremer and Lille’s Sven Botman, but both clubs are unwilling to sell in January.

Manchester United don’t want to loan Eric Bailly, while Nathan Aké’s salary is too high for the Rossoneri.

Tottenham’s Japhet Tanganga and Chelsea’s Malang Sarr have also been linked with a move to San Siro and so is Abdou Diallo of PSG even if the Senegal international is currently on Africa Cup of Nations duty and the Ligue 1 giants want at least €20m.

It remains to be seen what the future has in store for Matteo Gabbia.

He was supposed to leave Milan on loan after the arrival of a new defender, but Tomori’s injury may persuade Milan to keep hold of the 22-year-old.
