What Pellegrini’s Roma contract extension means for Tottenham

Lorenzo Pellegrini has reportedly signed a contract extension with Roma, so Tottenham won’t be able to sign him either on a free transfer or by paying his release clause.

Tottenham director Fabio Paratici is a long time admirer of Pellegrini having already tried to sign him from Sassuolo during his time at Juventus.

During the summer, the North London side opened talks with Roma and the player’s entourage, but the Giallorossi did not want to sell their captain unless his €30m release clause was matched.

Pellegrini’s contract is due to expire in the summer, but according to multiple reports in Italy, he’s now reached an agreement to extend his stay at the club until 2026.

Il Messaggero and Calciomercato.com report the Giallorossi have cancelled Pellegrini’s release clause, so if Spurs are still interested in the midfielder at the end of the season, they’ll have to negotiate a transfer fee with Roma.

José Mourinho’s side will announce Pellegrini’s contract extension in the coming days.

The Italian midfielder will see his salary rise to €4m-a-year, becoming Giallorossi’s highest earner after Tammy Abraham.

Many Serie A stars have their contracts expiring in June, including Lorenzo Insigne, Paulo Dybala, Franck Kessié and Andrea Belotti.
