Piacenza have been relegated to Lega Pro, but President Fabrizio Garilli warns “after spending €100m we won't register for the next season.”

The Biancorossi lost the play-off to Albinoleffe, 2-2 on aggregate, last night and drop out of Serie B for the first time in 20 years.

However, the club could disappear from Italian football altogether, as the patron has publicly refused to sign them up for the new campaign.

The Biancorossi lost the play-off to Albinoleffe, 2-2 on aggregate, last night and drop out of Serie B for the first time in 20 years.

However, the club could disappear from Italian football altogether, as the patron has publicly refused to sign them up for the new campaign.

“My father bought Piacenza in July 1983 and in those years we have spent €100m,” said Garilli in a statement.

“We started off with the fixed Vicenza play-off and then the 1986 betting scandal. It feels like we're seeing a repeat, as the latest investigation has once again shown football raped by illegal betting.

“The magistrate said the 2010-11 season is falsified. We asked to suspend the relegation play-offs, but were ignored.

“My family has been in charge of Piacenza FC for 29 years. For the last 20 years, we have been one of 11 clubs never to have been relegated into the third division. To do that, we spent over €100m and believed in clean football.

“What's happening now goes against my mentality and that of Piacenza. This is why I tell the institutions, the fans and people of Piacenza that I do not intend to register this club for the Lega Pro season.”

Garilli invited local investors to step forward and buy him out, but it's a race against time, as the club must be registered for the 2011-12 season by the end of June.

If investors come in after that deadline, Piacenza will begin again as a brand new club from Serie D.
