What Muriel said to get sent off in Sassuolo-Atalanta

Video footage has been used to work out precisely what Atalanta striker Luis Muriel said to get himself sent off for dissent against Sassuolo.

This was the second dismissal of the game after Joakim Maehle had been dismissed 30 minutes in for a studs-up challenge on Domenico Berardi, despite the fact he got the ball first and caught the player on the follow-through.

That had initially been given as a yellow card by referee Matteo Marcenaro, then changed to a red after he was called to an on-field review by VAR Luigi Nasca.

Deep into stoppages, with only moments to go until the final whistle and Atalanta trailing 1-0, Muriel said something to the referee.

Sky Sport Italia recreated the conversation with Muriel saying: “You are bad at this.”

Marcenaro immediately flashed the red card and told him to leave the field.

Muriel at this point acted incredulous and did not help his situation with the follow-up statement.

“What? I can’t even say you are bad at this? Am I supposed to congratulate you after that performance?”

Both Maehle and Muriel will be suspended when Atalanta take on Lazio next week in Serie A, although they could potentially face more than a one-match ban.
