Thierry Henry and Peter Schmeichel are unhappy with Alexis Sanchez’s second yellow card against Liverpool last night: ‘If you played football, that’s not yellow, what was he supposed to do?’

Inter sealed a 1-0 win at Anfield last night, but it was not enough to qualify for the Champions League quarter-finals. The Nerazzurri had lost the first leg in Milan 2-0, so they’ve been eliminated from the competition. There was controversy in the second half, just minutes after Lautaro Martinez’s goal. Sanchez saw red after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Fabinho.

Both Thierry Henry and Peter Schmeichel believes that it was a wrong call from the Spanish referee Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz.

“I am sorry, if you played football…sometimes the referee just goes by the book. What is he supposed to do?” Henry told CBS.

“He gets the ball. We saw the replay, at full speed. You don’t have time to take your leg away by kicking the ball. If you played football that’s not yellow.

“There’s absolutely no way he can pull the leg away. Sanchez wins the ball, that is enough. What is he supposed to do?” added Schmeichel.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher seems to agree with his fellow ex-footballers: “The foot is not even that high, it’s just the ankle or the boots. It’s probably just a foul, maybe and could be debatable.”

  1. The reality is that Alexis was lucky to even still be on the pitch at this point – he should have been sent off for the awful studs tackle on Thiago in the first half.

  2. what they should do is play that full segment after the game, a referee came on air to clarify why it was yellows in the two instances.

  3. Knowing Sanchez’ style of play, agressive trying to win and obtain the ball, he deservedly got the caution at the first incident with Thiago. A yellow instead of a red, because he’s a fair player with no intention to injure the opponent. That’s reading a game. The incident leading towards the eventual red card, there is a bookable offence. Fabinho does not leave it hanging so to get hit by the inevitable direction of Sanchez sliding through. Sanchez picks up pace in the tackle to get first on the ball ànd hit it immediately through to set up Martinez towards a shooting position. That pace leaves him no chance not to hit Fabinho like that. Bad intention? No. Bookable foul? Yes, this can lead to a sérious injury. By the book ànd having read the game; an explicable decision. From a lifelong Inter fan.

  4. On the balance it is fair. He arguably could have seen red for the tackle on Alcantara. And he knew it (see his reaction). With that said, how can you even go into a tackle like he did for the second yellow? When you’re on a yellow you can’t even attempt that challenge. Even though he did get the ball, he put himself in a bad position, and the ref had no choice.
