What Inter need to win Serie A title against rivals Milan in April

If the gap between Inter and Juventus at the top of the Serie A table opens up much further, the Nerazzurri could theoretically win the Serie A title ‘away’ at San Siro against rivals Milan in April.

Simone Inzaghi’s side currently lead the division by a margin of seven points with a game in hand over Juventus after the Old Lady lost 1-0 at home to Udinese on Monday night. If Inter capitalise on their strong form and win their game in hand, their lead at the top of Serie A extends to 10 points.

In order to mathematically guarantee the Serie A title before the final game of the season, Inter would need a four-point advantage by the end of their penultimate game of the campaign.

Working backwards, the necessary advantage at the top of the table increases by three points for every game.

Inter will face city rivals Milan on April 21, their sixth-last game of the season. By the above theory, Inter could win the Serie A title on that day if they have a 16-point gap at the top of the table by the time of the full-time whistle against Milan.

In order for that to happen, Inter would need to win their game in hand to extend their current lead over Juventus to 10 points, and then pick up another six points over the team in second place before the end of the Milan match.

Inter have 10 Serie A matches between now and the end of the Milan game to do it.
