What happened in that Juventus-Bologna VAR incident?

The chaotic scenes in the final minutes of Juventus 1-1 Bologna caused controversy from both teams, with two red cards, penalty appeals and debate over the VAR decision.

Bologna were leading 1-0 when Alvaro Morata rode a Gary Medel tackle and went down under an Adama Soumaoro challenge.

The referee waved play on and Juan Cuadrado thumped the frame of the open goal on the rebound.

While Morata appealed for a penalty, the referee did change his mind after the VAR on-field review, but it was to assign a free kick on the edge of the area and show Soumaoro the red card for stopping a clear scoring opportunity.

That was contentious for both parties, because Juve – and DAZN refereeing expert Luca Marelli – claim the foul was inside the area, or at least on the line, which counts as part of the penalty area.

Meanwhile, Bologna argue it wasn’t interrupting a scoring opportunity, as Arthur Theate was right there too.

Marelli later corrected his position and admitted the initial contact had been outside the box.

Gary Medel seemed to initially believe the referee had also awarded a penalty and reacted so furiously that he received two yellow cards for dissent in a matter of seconds.

If the referee had given a penalty, then Soumaoro would not have been sent off, as the so-called ‘double jeopardy’ is no longer applied.

Juve did eventually equalise with a Dusan Vlahovic header, breaking down nine-man Bologna.
