The chaotic scenes in the final minutes of Juventus 1-1 Bologna caused controversy from both teams, with two red cards, penalty appeals and debate over the VAR decision.

Bologna were leading 1-0 when Alvaro Morata rode a Gary Medel tackle and went down under an Adama Soumaoro challenge.

The referee waved play on and Juan Cuadrado thumped the frame of the open goal on the rebound.

While Morata appealed for a penalty, the referee did change his mind after the VAR on-field review, but it was to assign a free kick on the edge of the area and show Soumaoro the red card for stopping a clear scoring opportunity.

That was contentious for both parties, because Juve – and DAZN refereeing expert Luca Marelli – claim the foul was inside the area, or at least on the line, which counts as part of the penalty area.

Meanwhile, Bologna argue it wasn’t interrupting a scoring opportunity, as Arthur Theate was right there too.

Marelli later corrected his position and admitted the initial contact had been outside the box.

Gary Medel seemed to initially believe the referee had also awarded a penalty and reacted so furiously that he received two yellow cards for dissent in a matter of seconds.

If the referee had given a penalty, then Soumaoro would not have been sent off, as the so-called ‘double jeopardy’ is no longer applied.

Juve did eventually equalise with a Dusan Vlahovic header, breaking down nine-man Bologna.

  1. Done with watching Juve after this. It’s slays something I can’t stand this corrupt biased calls. Shameful

  2. To me the last replay show it is a foul but clearly not inside the box. Correct call by the ref not to give the penalty. As for Medel’s red card, perhaps because he is overreacting and saying something? One commentator in the live feed pointing out that Medel’s reaction was because he thought the ref’s going to give the pen away.

  3. More importantly Zinedine Rabiot Zidane missed an open goal and the Cuadrado to my surprise missed one as well. I bet his mind was playing tricks on him considering Juve tried to stiff him with that contract. Also credit to Feng Shui Max, destroyer of football mankind for setting a new record on how to not win against 9 men lol.

  4. Correct decision by both the referee and VAR, it’s outside the box!
Not only that, he made the right call by allowing play to continue, but Cuadrado wasted the chance.
The red card on Medel felt excessive, he should have explained it and calmed him down. But perhaps something else was said.
Terrible game by Juve, but props to Bologna for putting in the fight and playing a good game.

  5. I thought this corrupt soccer only happened in Portugal. How can this be happiness at this day and age. No wonder the stadiums are mostly empty.

  6. @Viktor “corrupt biased calls. Shameful” Dude, did you even watch the incident? Clear foul outside the box and red card since Soumaoro was last man. Medel was yelling at the referee and got a yellow for complaining, but he kept kept going instead of ending it there and got a second yellow. The ref and VAR took the right decision for once. I’m getting so tired of all these anti-Juve trolls here.

  7. Hey Master, stop reading if you’re tired of this. Just like everyone is tired of Juve being a punching bag in Europe

  8. I am glad Medel was sent off for abusing the referee. Far too much disrespect to the refs in all football leagues.

  9. @Viktor

What the HELL are you talking about. Juve have been getting VAR calls against them all season. Even this was not shown from overhead where the penalty could be judged. The foul was obvious and ref looked at like he couldn’t believe it..

  10. @viktor I’m so so sorry you won’t watch Juve matches anymore. You are a big loss :((( I kindly ask everyone here for one minute of silence.

  11. So true @Lord if Juventus could have finished those two open goals we would not need to analyse this. It also sends shivers down my spine to think that Morata could be renewed with a negotiated lower fee with Atletico. A half decent striker could have taken the ball in his stride and at least got the shot off. He has a first touch comparable with Lukaku, cannot even get you 10 goals a season and falls over all day long. Only Allegri sees gold in him.

  12. The ref got all of it right. The foul was on the edge of the box, it was the last man so red. The double yellow is the only thing under discussion but we don’t know what was said by the player to the ref. It’s clear he wasn’t happy and continued to shout things even after the first yellow so maybe he went too far. There’s no dispute even in the most anti-Juve papers that the ref acted correctly.

  13. No one is debating or complaining about the foul or red card to Soumaoro. What is ridiculous is the yellow and then red immediately afterwards shown to Medel. There is no excuse for taking this action when the player did not handle the ref? The ref didn’t even try to calm down the player, instead yelling back at him and aggravating the situation. Most likely Juve earned their point because of this shocking decision by the ref to send off both players in a matter of seconds.

  14. @Geedup A player who insults badly the ref, rightly gets a red, let alone a yellow card. I recall Davids and Montero getting straight reds for insulting the ref and given how angry Medel was, we just don’t know what he said to the ref. So, that can’t be taken as evidence that Juve were favoured. It’s just one of those things that can happen in football. Medel will be angry with himself today so not showing more restraint and putting his team in an even more difficult situation.

  15. Did the ref give a freekick to juve after the var review? Because he should not have. He did let advantage go on and Cuadrado missed a chance in gold. The VAR review allowed to decide where the foul had taken place and what card was appropriate.

  16. @Capello The ref didn’t give an advantage because he didn’t raise his hands. Var called it back because there was an obvious foul that the ref was going to do nothing about.
