Juventus thought they had won it at the death against Salernitana, but the goal was disallowed for Leonardo Bonucci’s offside interfering with play, sparking chaos with three red cards and a touchline brawl.

The Bianconeri were 2-0 down and fought their way back to 2-2 in Turin, with Bonucci’s penalty first saved by Luigi Sepe, but he turned in the rebound.

Moments later, Arkadiusz Milik’s glancing header on a corner flew into the net, sending Juve players and fans into huge celebrations.

During that, Milik received a second yellow card for taking his shirt off.

No sooner had that been done, the referee heard from VAR he had to rule on an offside position.

VAR can only make objective decisions, and whether a player is interfering with play or not is a subjective decision.

The referee considered Bonucci to be interfering with play because he actively moved towards the ball right in front of the goalkeeper and very nearly touched it with his head.

He was therefore doing everything possible to interfere with play and the goal was disallowed.

It is also arguable, as DAZN refereeing pundit Luca Marelli explained, that the goalkeeper was never going to make the save even if Bonucci had touched the ball, so in that sense he did not interfere with play.

Ultimately, it is up to the referee, the VAR was correct in having to send the decision down to the on-field review, but this will always be a matter of interpretation.

Following that decision, the touchline brawls broke out again, leading to Juan Cuadrado and Federico Fazio red cards, as well as Juventus coach Max Allegri.

It means Milik and Cuadrado will be suspended next week against Monza, and probably Allegri too.
