Davide Nicola is back to Salernitana two days after his sacking and after President Danilo Iervolino spoke to the team about his potential return to the Stadio Arechi.

Nicola has confirmed his return to the club with an official statement on social media. He has revealed that he received a call from Iervolino on Tuesday when the club President explained why he had decided to sack him after an 8-2 loss to Atalanta on Sunday.

Salernitana had held talks with several candidates, including Rafa Benitez, Roberto D’Aversa and Leonardo Semplici, but didn’t reach an agreement with any of them.

The closest one was D’Aversa, who rejected a six-month contract with an option until 2024, depending on the points earned in the second part of the season.

Football Italia can confirm that Iervolino met Salernitana players on Tuesday, informing them about the possibility of bringing back Nicola.

The Italian tactician hadn’t lost the dressing room but had argued with Iervolino over the team’s targets this season.

As explained by Nicola, the sporting director Morgan De Sanctis had a key role in his return to the Stadio Arechi 48 hours after his sacking. The former goalkeeper held talks with the President and the coach, eventually persuading Iervolino to offer the job to Nicola again.

Nicola will be on Salernitana’s bench on Saturday in the derby della Campania against Napoli at the Stadio Arechi.

Stefano Colantuono, a former Salernitana coach and the current chief of the youth sector, had overseen training sessions over the last two days.
