Milan star Rafael Leao has revealed that new coach Paulo Fonseca wants him to stay wide, ‘do one-twos’ and get on the ball as much as possible.

The Portugal international gave his assessment of his new coach in a long interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport on Thursday morning.

What Leao said about new Milan coach Fonseca

Leao says that Fonseca is a ‘direct’ person, he believes that the first team squad are already getting to grips with the new boss’s coaching methods and style of play.

“He’s a really direct person. He immediately shows what he wants. His teams have always played good football and for the attackers, he’s top,” Leao told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I feel good with him and his staff are always happy. The training sessions are very intense, always on the ball. In my opinion, we have already understood his playing ideas, it will be great.”

When asked what Fonseca has instructed him to do on the pitch, he replied: “He asks me to stay wide, look for the ball, do one-twos, get close to the area.”

The Fonseca era is now underway for Milan, who beat Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid in a pre-season friendly in the United States in the early hours of Thursday morning.

That victory came just a few days after another impressive 3-2 win over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in New York.

The Rossoneri will play one more game in the States, against Barcelona in Baltimore, before returning to Italy to conclude preparations for the start of the 2024-25 Serie A season.
