Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo gave a brief, yet emotional speech to the Napoli players during their post-match dinner after being confirmed as the 2022-23 Serie A Champions on Thursday night.
The influential full-back told his teammates that the success they had achieved together on the pitch will ‘reunite them forever’ after becoming the first Napoli side to win the title since 1989-90.
“Through hard work and sacrifice we managed to achieve an incredible result,” Di Lorenzo told the team after the title-clinching 1-1 draw with Udinese.
He continued: “In football, anything can happen between those who stay and those who leave, but this success will unite us forever. Forza Napoli.”
Di Lorenzo’s rise to the top has been nothing short of remarkable, especially considering he had been playing in the Lega Pro with Matera just over six years ago.
Now, the 29-year-old has become only the third captain in Napoli’s long history to lead the side to the summit of Italian football.
Celebrations continued long into the night, both for the players and for the supporters back home in Naples.
Napoli will have the opportunity to celebrate with their fans back at the Stadio Maradona when they face Fiorentina on Sunday evening.
