Nicolò Zaniolo celebrated playing his first game in almost one year with an Instagram post: ‘What a day.’

The 22-year-old played 45 minutes in Roma‘s first summer friendly under José Mourinho yesterday.

The former Inter and Fiorentina man scored from the spot and wore the captain’s armband too.

He hadn’t played for 10 months as his last competitive match was a Nations League tie between Italy and the Netherlands in September 2020 when the Italian midfielder suffered a second ACL injury in less than a year.

Zaniolo had already picked up a ligament rupture in January 2020 during a Serie A clash between Juventus and Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Roma midfielder took to his official Instagram account after yesterday’s game against Montecatini Calcio to show his satisfaction for finally returning on the pitch, writing: ‘What a day.’

The Giallorossi won 10-0 and Zaniolo played with a bandage around his left knee to protect it.

“Zaniolo has an incredible talent, like many others in this team,” Mourinho said during his first press conference as Roma coach last week.

“We know his injury history, we need to find the best habitat for him and the others.”
