On this day 22 years ago, Italy booked their spot in the Euro 2000 final after beating hosts Netherlands in the semi-finals, with Francesco Totti and Francesco Toldo coming out the heroes.
It was a tough afternoon at the Amsterdam Arena for the Azzurri but goalkeeper Toldo proved himself a hero, saving two penalties in regular time to ensure Italy had a chance at reaching the final. His strong performance continued in the shoot-out, where he saved two of the four Dutch attempts.
Totti also played a key role in the shoot-out, scoring a panenka to give the Azzurri a 3-0 lead.

I was 11 when i watched this game. Incredible game from Toldo. One of the best dutch teams ive seen. Played roughly 100 min with 10 men. What a win
Italy deserved to win that final too.
Italy should have won that year.France were so lucky.
Forza azzurri.
France got so lucky that final, Italy was a better team, but what a great semi final
Never forget that game
The Dutch missed two penalty’s in open play.
Del piero missed two great chances to finish the French in the final. Such a shame we didn’t win it . Oh well we had our time 6 years later
I remember this like it was yesterday. My dad left the house and didn’t watch the shoot out. He was fine for an hour and didn’t know the result no mobiles back then 😂😂😂
