Only one day into the Serie A season, fans are already furious with VAR after a seemingly legal opener by Mehdi Léris against Atalanta was disallowed.

The 24-year-old French forward thought he’d scored the opener for the Ligurian side in their first game of the season against la Dea yesterday, slotting the ball into the back of the net only 14 minutes in.

After a few seconds of jubilation, the referee Federico Dionisi ran over to the monitor to re-watch the jostling between Leris and Joakim Maehle. The latter went down fairly softly and everything appeared to be legal, but the goal was disallowed anyway, causing an uproar with fans of Sampdoria and other clubs around Italy.
