Watch as former Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini gives away a confusing handball in LAFC’s 4-1 win over Real Salt Lake yesterday.

The 37-year-old Italian centre back made his fourth MLS appearance yesterday, playing 72 minutes of action in the comfortable win. Despite putting in a good shift, Chiellini raised eyebrows with an incredibly strange move in the 69th minute.

As Real Salt Lake clear the ball downfield, an out-of-position Chiellini leaps for a bouncing ball that he has no hope of reaching with both of his arms raised directly upward. He seemingly parries the ball away, stopping the possible counter attack.

The 37-year-old was booked for his efforts, although some suggested that it could’ve been a direct red card due to the impact on play.

  1. Should’ve been red, but more importantly, what was he doing (or trying to do) in the first place?!

  2. The only reason he wasn’t sent off was that there was another defender behind him. It was hilarious to watch, though.
