Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli was informed that the Rossoneri should have been awarded a spot kick in the first half of their 0-0 draw against Juventus, although DAZN referee pundit Luca Marelli claims Marco Di Bello was correct to turn down penalty appeals from both sides.

Milan and Juve struggled to produce goal-scoring opportunities in their goalless stalemate at San Siro last night.

However, both sides appealed for potential penalty kicks. Juventus defender Alex Sandro bundled into Davide Calabria after just three minutes, with referee Di Bello waving to play on despite protests from Milan players.

Romagnoli was informed that the contact was worthy of a penalty before his half-time interview with the DAZN, with the broadcasters that showed the defender’s reaction. Romagnoli was probably talking to a Milan staff member who told him: ‘There was a penalty on Calabria, it’s the same foul as the derby.’

The person talking to Romagnoli refers to a penalty kick given to Inter in November’s derby against the Rossoneri when Franck Kessié got into a tangle with Hakan Calhanoglu.

Juventus players also protested for a potential penalty in the second half for a contact between Junior Messias and Alvaro Morata.

However, DAZN referee pundit Luca Marelli argued that Di Bello was right to reject both penalty appeals. Both spot-kicks would have been ‘too soft.’ ‘Penalty kicks are a serious thing,’ said Marelli, adding that the referees’ chiefs in Italy have changed the guidelines for similar incidents which should not lead to penalty kick calls.

6 thought on “‘Was it penalty?’ Romagnoli reacts after ref controversy in Milan-Juventus”
  1. Good for the ref. Two soft pens avoided. Players left to battle it out on their own and the result reflects the performence – equalish and boring.

  2. I actually agree with Luca Marelli, but I just wish they were consistent. Some refs gives penalties softer than my butt cheeks every week to some teams and for others somebody has to get murdered in the box for a whistle.

  3. Neither were penalties. Fair play to the ref for also waving away Dybala constantly falling over like a fly. Saying that, I still have no idea how Bentancur and Cuadrado escaped bookings. Literally spent the whole game fouling.
