“The league is open,” Vrsaljko told Sky.

“We got it wrong at the start and we’ve recovered well now, but we can still improve. We’re really strong, we can go far.

“We know we’re strong but it’s easy to talk. It’s a long season, we’ll take it one game at a time and see where we end up.

“I’m definitely hoping to play in the Champions League next year, finishing in the top three in Serie A.”

Vrsaljko has had a difficult return to Italy though, as he’s been struggling with injury.

“I’m very happy because I became an Inter player, then the other things are separate. I’m really happy in Italy and with these teammates, we’re improving every day – on an individual level too.

“The Croatians in the squad helped me settle, but I’m already used to Italian football, so there’s nothing majorly new.

“We can grow from every point of view, we’re playing well and we need to try to win them all.

“In the Champions League we have to get through the group. Then we’ll see where we end up.”
