Atletico Madrid have confirmed that Inter right-back Sime Vrsaljko will be out for a ‘long period’ after undergoing knee surgery.

A statement on Atleti’s official website explains Vrsaljko went under the knife in Belgium and will recover in Madrid as opposed to Milan.

The Croat joined Inter on a €6.5m loan with a €17.5m option to buy last summer but has been limited to just 13 appearances this season.

Although the Nerazzurri have not made an official announcement, it is effectively confirmation that they have sent the stopper back to Spain.

Portugal international Cedric Soares has since replaced Vrsaljko in Luciano Spalletti’s squad.
