Former Roma forward Rudi Voeller was excited to see Paulo Dybala alongside Tammy Abraham and underlined his confidence in Lorenzo Pellegrini as Roma captain.

The Giallorossi unveiled Dybala to their fans yesterday and the scenes in the streets of Rome were incredible, with seemingly thousands in attendance to welcome the Argentinian star, who has been called their biggest signing since Gabriel Batistuta. Tammy Abraham had a great debut year in Italy and fans are excited to see what he can do in his second campaign.

Speaking to Nsl, Voeller first discussed if there were any similarities between Pellegrini and his former Roma captain Giuseppe Giannini.

“You can’t compare them, Pellegrini is a great player and deserves the captain’s armband. I didn’t see so many Roma games last year, I saw those at the end of the season and Pellegrini is a great player and he deserves to be the captain of Roma.

“This is a good thing but it’s very difficult to make comparisons, playing football was different 30 years ago.”

He gave his thoughts on Abraham, who scored 17 goals in 37 Serie A appearances last season.

“Us at Bayer Leverkusen also wanted to get Abraham, he has great talent as a centre forward and I’m very happy that he went to Roma.

“I’m convinced that with Dybala behind him, they can build a perfect pair.”

The 1990 World Cup winner also spoke about the qualities of Dybala.

“He’s not very fast but he has a spark in his foot that’s incredible, he has imagination, he can dribble in all situations and is exceptional and is the ideal partner for all strikers.”

Voeller discussed the controversial statements recently made by Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann, who suggested that Matthijs de Ligt arrived in Germany incredibly unfit after his time with Juventus.

“Today I don’t think these ideas are true, when you play at this level you have to be fit. It often depends on the coach and the coach’s team but there are not so many differences in different leagues.

“Mourinho at Roma will definitely do training like he did with Chelsea, Tottenham, Real Madrid.”

He touched on the fact that Italy are missing out on the World Cup for the second time in a row.

“In my opinion, Italy are not the strongest team in Europe and despite that they deserved to win the European Championship.

“Italy’s problem is only up front, in the other departments there are no problems. There are few strikers and that is the biggest problem, maybe in a couple of years some will appear.”

Finally, Voeller discussed if Zagadou would be a good addition to Jose Mourinho’s squad.

“He can be a good signing, he’s good but I don’t think he’s someone who’ll shift the balance.”

The 1990 World Cup winner spent five years with the Giallorossi from 1987 to 1992, scoring 45 goals in 142 Serie A appearances for the club. He helped the side win the Coppa Italia in 1991 and was inducted into Roma’s Hall of Fame in 2014.
