Andre Villas-Boas was frustrated at Chelsea’s defensive errors in Naples, but insists they can “turn this tie around” in the second leg.

“After we went 1-0 up we missed opportunities, then should’ve done better defending. Mistakes against Napoli, whose attack is their strength, mean you can get punished,” the manager told Sky Sports after a 3-1 Champions League defeat.

“The third goal was perfectly avoidable and a one-goal advantage would’ve been a better result to take home. A 3-1 is more difficult to recover, not impossible, of course, because of the amount of chances that we get and the environment we must create to turn this tie around and go through.

“The first 90 minutes have passed, but we have another 90 minutes to turn the tie around. We need to analyse what we did wrong, as there were a couple of things that we need to do better, and have the knowledge we can create problems with our attacking options.

“In the beginning if you go 2-0 up and it’s a different story. The statistics are very similar, as both teams created a lot in a game that was open, end-to-end, and it’s a little unfair that Napoli scored the third one in our best period. It brings us a little bit down.

“There are 90 minutes ahead of us and there’s a big possibility with this away goal we can turn this tie around.”

Villas-Boas surprised many with his starting line-up, leaving Frank Lampard, Michael Essien, Ashley Cole and Mikel Obi on the bench.

“It’s a team selection, I can explain it, but it makes no difference. It was the best thing for the team at that moment.

“I have the full confidence of the owner. Do I expect to be in charge for the second leg? Yes, for sure.”
