“We are facing perhaps the strongest team in Europe, I think stronger than Juve, but certainly more entertaining. We are a work in progress, trying to put a leaky boat back on an even keel,” Vigorito – who is Neapolitan – told Mediaset Premium.
“This is a difficult evening, but we seek comfort in the choices made by the club and the Coach.”
Le Streghe have been transformed in the January transfer window, signing the likes of Bacary Sagna and former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Sandro.
“When you have the option for players like Sandro, Guilherme and Djuricic, it’s not to go into Serie B, it’s to spend next season in Serie A. We have an indestructible will to win and survive.
“The Coach told us where the squad was deficient and we tried to fix those issues, so now we’ll give it our all to stay in Serie A next season.
“Since I arrived at Benevento, in 12 years my Coaches have been able to count on circa 160 players. We have often had revolutions in July or January, trying to find the right approach. One thing nobody can say is that we didn’t invest in this club and this team.”
Is it madness to hope Benevento can survive after picking up only seven points in the first 22 rounds?
“We might be insane, we might be dreamers, we might be suicidal, but we certainly put our heart and soul into what we want to be a huge achievement.
“Sagna is too much of a champion to not realise how hard this will be, but he chose to let his heart beat with Benevento and hopefully we can all have our hearts beat together in celebration.”
