Ex-striker Christian Vieri says Italy’s elimination from EURO 2024 is ‘everyone’s fault’ and insists the Azzurri must ‘always’ try to win major tournaments.

Vieri spoke about Italy’s disappointing Euro exit during an event organised by Lega Serie A.

“It’s everyone’s fault. I never like to blame someone specifically; it’s a group, so it’s everyone’s fault,” said the ex-striker.

“I expected much more, like everyone else. It was a bad European Championship, and there’s nothing wrong with saying it. We are Italy, and Italy do not just participate in Euros or World Cups. Italy must always try to win. This country goes crazy for football, so we can’t be happy with just being there; we must go and try to win,” continued the former Italian forward.

Vieri blames ‘everyone’ after Italy’s Euro elimination

“It’s everyone’s fault. Of course, the coach is the most blamed, but this is part of the job. We surely need to improve. The coach and the federation will know what to do.

“Sometimes, you struggle to do everything. I am sure the players gave their all. We didn’t play well, anyone. But I don’t think the players didn’t care about the national team. Sometimes, you just struggle with everything. It’s part of sports.”

  1. Italy has lost credentials in world football. There should be radical change in the whole team.

  2. I agree that Italy has lost credentials in world football. The Baggio document years ago should be studied not put aside!

  3. Italy can be good at times as seen in 2021, but he last 14 years has been extremely poor for the most part. Whether it’s talent, the coaching choices or the general attitude in general, they need to be better in all areas. Teams with much less talent have made World Cups in Europe since 2018, so something is wrong here

  4. You are both wrong..How did the u-17 do? How about the u-19?? How about the under 20’s???Italy is the most consistent team. Guys, we can’t win every Euro and what league got the extra team for Tournaments????SerieA

  5. Italy won the World Cup in 2006. Then they won the Euro Cup in 2021. The National team still holds the world record for longest undefeated streak with 33 games under Mancini. A 3rd place finish at the last Nations League Cup. Succesful runs by the U19, 20, 21’s. But then we don’t qualify for two consecutive World Cups, and now the dismal performance at this year’s Euro. Extreme upward, extreme down turn performances within an 18 year period. Why such extremes ?
