Sampdoria midfielder Ronaldo Vieira tells Football Italia the football is “more tactical” in Italy but “not as physical” as England.

The 20-year-old joined the Blucerchiati from Leeds United in the summer, and he spoke to our chief correspondent Richard Hall about his new life in Serie A.

“I enjoy it even though I haven’t really played a lot,” Vieira explained.

“I don’t expect to get straight into the team, you know, but I’m hopeful I will do, it may just take some time. At the moment the team is doing well so we’ll see.

“I am always confident, I’ve always been a confident boy. I’ve always thought that if I’m honest with myself and if I think I can play, then I’ll be able to get in the team.

“The season has just started so I need to keep working hard, keep training and supporting the team on and off the field.

“It felt good to make my debut in Serie A [against Napoli] and we obviously won, it was a brilliant performance by the team.

“Everyone was happy but it was special for me because I made my debut. The football I wouldn’t say is that different, but its more tactical. If you make a mistake you get punished.

“Maybe it’s not a physical as it is in England and that’s something I have to adapt to as I am a physical player so I have to adapt to that side of it. I have to learn me about the tactics but that why this is a good place for me to learn and progress my career.”

Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero is known for being a bit of a fiery character…

“That’s what I’m told! He has been alright with me, and I can’t really say anything other than that I like him. We tried to have a conversation in Italian and he seems like a really good guy.

“The language? It’s going okay because I have Portuguese, so I can understand a few words. It’s the speaking side of it that’s a bit harder but I’m taking lessons and picking it up.

“On the football side of it I can pick up what they’re saying and understand a lot of what the Coach wants.”

Coach Marco Giampaolo is seen as one of the rising stars of Italian coaching, and the midfielder can see why.

“Yeah, he is good,” Vieira confirmed.

“I spoke to a few people about him and they all said he is a good Coach, as you can see. He has made a good team and I think I can learn a lot from him and that’s what I am trying to do. Get out there, learn, train hard and when my chance comes I’ll take it.”
