Video: Why Milan’s goal in Empoli was not offside

Empoli were penalised for an elementary mistake, as they didn’t realise that Rafael Leao could not be offside from a throw-in.

The Rossoneri were struggling to break the Tuscans down at the Stadio Castellani after 78 minutes of football.

However, when Sandro Tonali went to take a throw-in, Leao realised he was in acres of space and had been completely forgotten by the Empoli defenders.

He could not be flagged offside from a throw-in, so was able to control and then roll across for Ante Rebic to tap in undisturbed.

Empoli coach Paolo Zanetti was furious, as Tonali took the throw-in several metres further forward than where the ball went out of play, but that is not within the VAR’s purview.
