West Ham United used the classic Channel 4 Football Italia intro from the 1990s to announce that Gianluca Scamacca had joined them from Sassuolo, but got his name wrong.

The transfer was worth €36m plus €6m in add-ons and a 10 per cent cut of any future sell-on fee.

That translates to £30.27m plus £5.04m in bonuses.

The Hammers made a new version of the opening credits to Football Italia coverage on Channel 4 in order to unveil their new Italy international striker.

On behalf of Football Italia – we are honoured. Also on behalf of Football Italia – you got his name wrong and wrote Scammaca.

It was incorrect all the way through the video clip, not just at the end.

The Premier League side’s social media team realised the error and took the video down, putting a new version up some time later.

One can only hope the people who printed his West Ham United jersey were more careful.

He had been close to Paris Saint-Germain, but the Premier League side outbid them for the centre-forward.

  1. Let’s hope he isn’t back in serie a this time next summer, post half a season rotting on the bench.

  2. Peter Pietraroia

No such thing as Lecce FC, fella. U.S Lecce. If you’re going to ‘love’ Italian teams, at least get their names right.
