Venezia have still not recovered from the shock and anger of seeing Ethan Ampadu shown a straight red card against Salernitana, so presented the footage without comment.

The incident occurred 67 minutes into yesterday’s Serie A match, when Ampadu went into a sliding tackle on Franck Ribery.

At first, the Wales international was stunned that a free kick had been given, then in outright shock when the straight red card was flashed at him.

As it was a straight red rather than a double yellow, VAR was able to intervene and urged Marco Di Bello to view it again on the monitor.

Despite seeing the same footage, Di Bello stuck with his original decision that this was extremely dangerous play.

Salernitana went on to win the game 2-1 in stoppages.

  1. But do people understand soccer? He takes down Ribery before he gets the ball. It’s a breakaway without the foul. Clear red. How is this controversial?

  2. How is this not controversial. He won the ball about as cleanly as possible. It’s not even a foul. And he gets a straight Red. That’s and insane decision to be upheld after a VAR review. Like football is a contact sport. The route the refs are going down will see football less physical than basketball.
