Video: Tomori red card very harsh in Milan-Chelsea

There was a great deal of controversy around an early decision at San Siro, which saw Fikayo Tomori sent off and a penalty awarded to Chelsea.

It is now very rare to see both a dismissal and penalty, considered to be ‘Double Jeopardy’, unless it is also a clear goal-scoring opportunity and there was no attempt to play the ball.

The referee watched Tomori twice touch Mason Mount on the shoulder as the England international was running at goal and preparing to shoot.

It was a very harsh decision to give both the spot-kick and the red card, especially as the foul itself seemed very light indeed.

VAR did not intervene because it did not quality as a clear and obvious error, but also as the referee was in the perfect position to judge the situation and the severity of the challenge himself.
