There was a bizarre incident after Mateo Retegui equalised for Genoa against Salernitana, as he was struck by an object thrown from the stands – seemingly an afternoon snack – but fortunately a rock missed.

The Italy international fired in at the near top corner from an Albert Gudmundsson assist to cancel out the early Agustin Martegani opener.

Retegui seemed to be struck by something thrown from the stands of the Stadio Arechi just behind the goal.

DAZN pitch-side reporters assure it was a pre-packed afternoon snack that hit the forward and Kevin Strootman even jokingly took a bite out of it.

More concerning was that referee Daniele Orsato went over to the fourth official to hand over a different object thrown – seemingly a rock or lump of concrete.

Fortunately, that did not hit anyone.

A lighter was also thrown and delivered to the officials on the touchline.

It is becoming an ugly habit, just days after Lazio fans threw a bottle that struck Roma midfielder Edoardo Bove on the head.
