Yann Sommer reveals Simone Inzaghi’s style of playing out from the back using the goalkeeper is ‘a big reason why’ he chose to join Inter from Bayern Munich, replacing Andre Onana. ‘I am a really explosive goalkeeper and try to be courageous.’
The veteran finally made the transfer to San Siro after weeks of negotiations, as the Nerazzurri agreed to pay the €6m asking price, but not activate the release clause.
This allows them to spread the payment to Bayern Munich out over a two-year period.
“I have a lot of reasons to come here. It’s a huge club in the world and in Italy, a lot of tradition, so it’s a new challenge in my career. I am looking forward to playing at San Siro, to see the ambience and the fans,” the Switzerland international told Inter TV.
This will be the 34-year-old’s first experience in Serie A after a career spent entirely in Switzerland and Germany.
“I do not have too many expectations, I am just looking forward to the challenges against new opponents, new strikers and to hopefully be successful with Inter. It’s all new for me, I am really happy to be here.”
Sommer is filling some big shoes after Andre Onana made the move to Manchester United and reassures the fans that he will continue to be a sweeper-keeper.
“I am a really explosive goalkeeper, so I try to be courageous, to help the team and be an option for them with my feet. I try to give a lot of confidence to the team, calm as a goalkeeper and be consistent.
“That’s a big reason I like to play for Inter. Simone Inzaghi likes to play out from behind, that’s my style of goalkeeping as well. I like to be a good option for the team, to play with a lot of pressure, that’s what I like.”
He takes over also from Samir Handanovic, while following in the footsteps of Julio Cesar and Walter Zenga.
“It means a lot for me, it makes me proud, because a lot of big legendary goalkeepers played here. I am looking forward to pulling on the jersey at San Siro and feel the power in the stadium.”
