There is controversy around Manchester United’s stoppage-time equaliser against Atalanta, as Mason Greenwood handled to set up Cristiano Ronaldo.

The incident occurred at the 92nd minute at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo, to seal a 2-2 draw.

Greenwood knocked it down for Ronaldo to score on a low volley from the edge of the box.

Footage suggests Greenwood controlled the ball with his arm, but despite there being a silent VAR check for a handling offence, the officials decided not to recommend an on-field review or even disallow the goal themselves.

This will no doubt infuriate Atalanta and the Italian football media, who have already seen several very contentious decisions go against Serie A sides in Europe this season.

  1. Honestly, why bother having VAR?

Just give Manure passage to the next round and save people the time and effort.

  2. Don’t torment yourselves people at least they got a tie and they are in good shape to advance.

  3. @Ferban: Simply, because United is not Roma, and Atalanta is not Juventus.

If you want me to expand on it: Not every handball in attack nullifies a goal. If a player accidentally plays with hand & then passes the ball to his teammate-scorer, the goal is valid.
Now, who can decide what is accidental? Here the beautiful “Football Hierarchy formula” works its magic. You just type “EPL” & “Man United” on one side & “Serie A”, “Atalanta” on another –& Hierarchical Calculator gives you the answer. It’s that simple. (Sometimes you also need to take into account who the relevant players are and add them in the formula as well.)
The beautiful Hierarchy Formula doesn’t always work: If you write in “Inter“, “Lautaro” : “Milan“, “Hernandez”, you’ll get the same “special Juventus privilege status achieved” value. …In that case, refs just flip a coin!
Hierarchy Formula is not only used in sports, a lot of people write in gender, race, nationality, religion, financial status… & get instant results for Life as well!

  4. This decision will never go in favor of Italian clubs and always go in favor of EPL clubs or others that are more close to UEFA, who generates more revenue for UEFA – Atalanta or Man U, that’s why the VAR ignored the handball. There are clear examples in past 10-15 yess all decisions go against Italian teams

  5. @ROMAntic yeah yeah the result in Norway was Juve’s conspiracy and of course “football hierarchy formula” as well lol

  6. Deliberate or not, that handball has directly aided in a goal being scored.

Saying that, and over both legs, neither side deserved to win. Obviously Atalanta really miss Goesens and Hateboer. Maehle and Zappacosta are decent alternatives, but goesens and hateboer bring a controlled physicality taking atalanta to a whole other level. I thought it was a generally poor game. A lot of easy giving away of possession, poor passing, decision making and just all round play. A shadow of the Atalanta side of last season and previous. Man utd were woeful.

  7. OK, from what I understand from the day after, the rule was modified this past off-season.

Inadvertant handballs in the buildup to the goal (which this was as Greenwood knew nothing about it), the goal will stand. Boh, news to me!

My only issue with that is now you are asking the VAR Room and the Referee to determine intent and how well the player disguised it. This is very dangerous and it can spiral out of control.
