Mateo Retegui got his name on the scoresheet on his Italy debut, as the Argentina-born striker found the net in the EURO 2024 qualifier against England.

The 23-year-old is the latest in a long history of Oriundi to represent the Azzurri, players born in South America who come from Italian families.

It was a well-worked goal too, Nicolò Barella winning back the ball with a foul from Harry Maguire, then Marco Verratti and Lorenzo Pellegrini combining to find Retegui for the angled drive.

He is the second Italy player to score his debut goal against England, after Sergio Brighenti at Wembley Stadium on May 6, 1959.

That game ended 2-2.
