The Tuscans had taken a 2-1 lead at San Siro through Nedim Bajrami and a Patrick Cutrone header that bounced off the underside of the bar and goalkeeper Ionut Radu.
Just as the Nerazzurri seemed to be crashing out of the competition, Ranocchia flew for his surprisingly athletic strike on the Edin Dzeko knockdown.
The centre-back was wearing the captain’s armband this evening and made it 2-2, forcing extra time.
