Napoli unveiled a statue of Diego Armando Maradona before the game against Lazio with a touching ceremony in the stadium named after the Argentinean legend.

Maradona died on November 25, 2020, from a heart attack and Napoli have paid tribute to their legend in many different ways over the last year.

They have dropped three different versions of special Maradona kits and tonight, before the match against Lazio, they unveiled a statue representing the 1986 World Cup winner.

Napoli also showed a message by Pelé for the former Argentinean star.

“You know the love and the respect that I have for Maradona,” the Brazilian legend said.

“Now, I have the opportunity to tell everyone that we can never forget a big player like him. He was a friend and I believe he deserves this ceremony in Naples.”

FIFA President Gianni Infantino was attending the ceremony and so were FIGC President Gabriele Gravina, Paolo Dal Pino, Luigi De Siervo and Italy 2006 World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro, a product of Napoli academy.

Corrado Ferlaino, the Napoli President who had signed Maradona, revealed the sculpture on the sidelines. The statue was unveiled at 18.42 UK time in front of 40,000 Napoli fans
