Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk went viral for seeming to scuff the penalty spot ahead of West Ham’s missed penalty, but it was nothing compared to the legendary antics of Riccardo Maspero in the derby between Juventus and Torino.

Van Dijk was caught on camera dragging his studs along the spot just before Jarrod Bowen was about to take the penalty, which was saved by Alisson Becker.

Probably the most famous ever version of that technique was performed by Torino player Ricky Maspero during a legendary 3-3 draw in the Derby Della Mole in October 2001.

Juventus received a late penalty that Marcelo Salas was about to take, but during the discussions with the referee, Maspero cheekily started repeatedly kicking the penalty spot and creating a divot.

It worked, because Salas blasted the penalty into the sky.
