Italy paid tribute to their 1982 World Cup win on the event’s 40-year anniversary.

On July 11 of that year, the Azzurri triumphed over West Germany 3-1 thanks to goals from Paolo Rossi, Marco Tardelli – which led to one of the most famous celebrations in the sport’s history – and Alessandro Altobelli.

It was Italy’s third World Cup triumph, and en route they defeated one of the all-time great Brazil sides 3-2 in a World Cup epic with Rossi netting a hat-trick.

The Azzurri also eliminated Diego Maradona’s Argentina.

Rossi won the Golden Boot as top goal scorer and, later that year, the Ballon d’Or.

  1. Brilliant world cup remember so we’ll wen football was football not like today Italy v Brazil match in 82 still best game I’ve ever seen

  2. Fantastic tournament. It doesn’t get more “group of death” than Brazil, Italy, Argentina…. and even though the outcome of the game hasn’t changed in 40 years, I still get nervous every time I see the build-up to Zoff’s save at the end of the Brazil match!

  3. Who would of thought us winning this tournament after the group stage 🤣🤣🤣Only Italy can do these things.
