Cesc Fabregas is looking forward to testing himself as a coach for Como in Serie A, including against his ‘amazing’ old boss Antonio Conte.

The club earned promotion from Serie B and is back in the top flight for the first time in 21 years.

Fabregas was technically only the assistant manager last term to Osian Roberts when securing second place, as he did not yet have the necessary coaching badges, but has now been promoted to the official role of coach.

“It has to be a team with a lot of energy that always goes to win, no matter where we play. I think that has to be non-negotiable,” said the man who only turned 37 in May.

“I think Serie A is a very tactical league. Very good coaches came into the league this year and I think it will be very tough because a lot of coaches with different ideas, different philosophies, different systems.

“It will be a fantastic test for us.”

Among the new arrivals is Conte in charge of Napoli, who of course worked as the manager for Fabregas at Chelsea from 2016 to 2018.

“Of course I will face coaches like Antonio Conte, that was my former coach. And it will be amazing to be able to compete against him in another area now.”

Como are signing up big names this summer, including Pepe Reina, Raphael Varane, Andrea Belotti and Alberto Dossena, but Fabregas also has a warning for them.

“Whoever comes here needs to understand that we are not Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona. We are a very humble club and we want to keep growing, make the right steps at the right times.

“We don’t want to grow too fast. We know exactly where we are and where we want to be in a few years, and we need to do it well.”
