Gaetano Castrovilli has arrived at the Lazio pre-season training camp, joining as a free agent, and was accompanied by new teammate Mattia Zaccagni.

The former Fiorentina midfielder was able to sign for the Aquile for free after his contract with the Viola was allowed to expire on June 30.

He had been on the verge of a €12m transfer to Premier League side Bournemouth in January when the deal was scuppered by a failed medical, which showed he needed another operation on the knee that was already injured in 2022.

The 27-year-old Italy international drove up to the Lazio pre-season training camp late this evening and stopped to sign club jerseys for waiting fans.

It is believed to be a one-year contract with option to extend for a further two, activated automatically if he makes a certain number of appearances.

Castrovilli was accompanied in the same vehicle by new teammate Zaccagni, who was given extra time off after participating in EURO 2024 with Italy.

It was his last-gasp goal against Croatia that allowed the Azzurri to squeeze through the group phase, eventually eliminated by Switzerland in the Round of 16.
